Chess, Checkmate, and Beyond

MNchess.org—

Sometimes a Vikings loss is more than just a three hour evening activity I occupy my time with. Why wasn’t that obvious facemask not called by the ref, seriously! Sometimes, chess is more than just a weekend activity we occupy our time with. Chess enters our lives routinely…when was the last time you were at Karaoke and someone belts out One Night in Bangkok. Now check out the lyrics and music video. During a period of time where many of us were house bound, we delighted ourselves with The Queens Gambit.

On November 2nd at the Mraz Center For The Performing Arts, chess will enter the chat once again with comedian Pat LaVone who incorporates chess into his routine from his many interactions with players, parents, and situations that arise at a chess competition. Just as The Queens Gambit can be enjoyed on its own if you know nothing about chess, Pat’s performance will leave anyone pleased even if you don’t know the difference between P-KB4 and P-KB4. Pat LaVove was a former Coach of the Year recipient, and is an active chess coach.

An hour before the show, there will be chess taking place in the form of friendly banter and blitz. For those that are familiar with Boston Mike from Coffee Chess, we have our own version of that with Burnsville Blomer. John Blomer will take on challengers in Blitz. John even got to play against Boston Mike earlier this year. All links are below.

Bring your friends and check out the comedy stylings of Pat LaVone, Mary Jo Pehl, and Linda Aarons. 6:30 for Burnsville Blomer, 7:30 for the comedy act. Plenty of seats are available.

One Night in Burnsville makes the chess folks chuckle, thank you for your laughter all these years.
